The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Head of Operations, Femi Giwa, has said that about 34 shops and 70 houses were affected by the tanker fire that occurred at Idimu area of Lagos at around midnight on Friday, June 5.
Giwa
who spoke on Saturday, June 6, at the scene of the accident said 10 out
of the houses were completely destroyed by the explosion, which he said
was aided by a Suya seller fire.
He
explained that after the fuel truck crashed, it spilled its contents
into the surrounding areas but burst into flames when the fuel flowed
into the Suya seller’s spot.
He confirmed Pulse
initial report that the two fully-loaded tankers involved in the crash,
as well as some commercial bus drivers had attempted to outrun one
another along Idimu Road.
“The tanker
at the back, that is the second one, fell and crashed into a building,
but the impact was reduced by the culvert. The content (of the tanker)
then spilled and was ignited by the flames of a suya seller nearby,” Giwa said.
